Shenandoah National Park

One of the perks of being a federal employee is a day off work for holidays like Columbus Day, Martin Luther King Day, and Presidents' Day.  Thanks to the three-day weekend made possible by MLK Day we were able to enjoy a weekend getaway in the Blue Ridge Mountains.  On Saturday morning we packed up our hot chocolate and homemade marshmallows and set out for a cabin about 100 miles west of D.C.

Our plan for the weekend was to relax, eat lots of good food, and go hiking in the Shenandoah National Park.  The park has over 500 miles of hiking trails, including approximately 100 miles of the Appalachian Trail.  Ryan selected a hike that would take us to the park's second highest waterfall.  For the majority of the hike the trail runs along the stream that later cascades 86 feet into the Robinson River, forming the Whiteoak Canyon Falls.  The park was unbelievably quiet and serene.

This mountain stream water is particularly tasty!!
