Moving here from Texas we are not accustomed to a "real" fall, so we wanted to be sure to see the fall leaves in all their red, orange, and yellow glory. The locals informed us that the Shenandoah Valley is the best area in Virginia for fall color. After a month of dutifully checking the foliage reports to determine when the leaves would be at their peak, we opted to take in the fall color via a drive to the Marker Miller Orchards in Winchester, VA (about 100 miles west of D.C.). What better way to see the leaves than a drive through rural Virginia followed by a picnic in an apple orchard?
The drive to the orchard was gorgeous! Heading west from D.C. the highway was flanked by rolling hills, green fields, quaint farms, and trees in shades of red, orange, and yellow so bright they almost didn't look real. After thoroughly exploring the apple orchard we ate our picnic lunch and headed home with apples, apple butter, a ham bone for Cooper, and apple cider donuts for Ryan.

There were a surprising number of apples on the ground under the trees at the orchard. Cooper thought that someone had left a lot of red balls lying around for him to play with.

Aww Cooper :) So, so cute!! That looks absolutely beautiful. What has the weather been like?
